"Have a cigar"&"Rock'n Roll Band"

Though both, “have a cigar” and “Rock’n Roll band” talk about the same subject of a band’s life, in “have a cigar”, Pink Floyd uses a cynical tone and a manager’s point of view, showing the negative and manipulative aspects the music industry, while in “Rock’n Roll”, Boston connect an excited tone with memory related imagery, giving their audience the impression of the positive and fun sites of their band life.

The mocking tone, Pink Floyd use in “have a cigar” serves as an imitation of a band manager, smoking a cigar and inviting a boy in, in order to prophesy him a rich music-future. Obviously the Speaker is eager for money and seems pretty egoistic. With his cigar he just talks about what will come and how to make more money out of the success of others. The cigar carries a symbolic meaning, since it occurs in both songs related to Band Managers. “We call it riding the Gravy Train” lets the audience picture the fat, gold and dripping liquid. It seems rich and beautiful on one hand, but on the other hand the second thought will bring the truth: It is gross waste-fat. What seems pretty on the surface is anything but pretty on the inside. This can easily be related to the band- business, this man is talking about.

In “Rock’n Roll band” the excitement of the songwriters (Boston), who are the speakers as well is primary. Although “plain’ all the bars, sleepin’ in our cars” doesn’t seem to be the most wonderful thing in the world, they seem happy about it. Spending the night in a car is one of the most uncomfortable things ever. The seats don't leave the room almost everybody needs to get a nice and proper rest. Probably the nights they spent in this uncomfortably position, getting nearly no sleep, were by far not as much fun as in their memories. But memories change the perception they had back then. In memory, everything seems better and more fun than it actually was. In this song, the band manager is described as a rich man as well, when he meets the band in Rhode Island. “He smoked a big cigar, drove a Cadillac car”, and promises the boys the same glory future, Pink Floyd's Manager promises the boy in “have a cigar”.

Though both songs talk about the same thing, it is interesting to take a deeper look under the surface and see how different they actually are.

Analysis “Ironc”, Alanis Morissette

Telling the listener little stories about random people’s unluck, in “Ironic” Alanis Morissette uses multifaceted irony, failed examples of irony, and sad imagery, in order to explain that life is “a little too ironic” and bad situations tend to get worse.

The song is made of two little “ironic” stories and a third verse filled with little everyday examples.
In the very first story, an old man wins the lottery and dies the next day. It seems really unlucky that he played all his life and dies directly after he finally won. If he won earlier in life, would he have had the chance to really spent the money and have a better life, or would he have died even than? Another question is, if it’s really that exciting for an 98- year old, to win that much money. Eventually he already lost parts of his mind or maybe he wasn’t in physical shape to really enjoy what he could’ve done with the big win. Also, the example of “ten thousand spoons when all you need is a fork” states misfortune. The exaggerated number of spoons you don’t need pushes the statement to irony.

The second story is about a man who is afraid to fly and when he finally does it, “the plane crase[d]s down”. He waits his entire flight to take one single flight and exactly this one flight happens to go wrong. The chance of dying in a plane crash is 1:3.000.000. The example of the plane crash killed man also is sad imagery. Alanis describes how he “kissed his kids goodbye” and gets on the plane. Many people who are scared of flying will understand his fear, and feel with him when the irony lets him die. He obviously leaves a family behind. He leaves the question why he actually got on that plane, as well. But not the entire sog is made of sad imagery. Some are more heartbreaking than others, for example the “ran on your wedding day” is by far not as tragic as death.

Sadly, this song contains a couple of failed examples of irony. Most of her examples happen unexpected and serve as a little shocking aspect of sarcasm. But when she sings “It’s like rain on your wedding day”, there obviously is the opinion of expecting a nice day on your wedding. The big issue of this little statement is to find the difference between hope and expectation, so it definitively be fine  to hope for good weather, but not to expect is. Weather is a random thing, and not influential at all. There are many days in the year when it rains, and it is not shocking or totally sad, when one of those days happens to be a wedding day.  Another example is a “traffic jam when you’re already late”. Is this really such a bad thing to happen. If someone is late already, he is late anyways and nothing can change that. A traffic jam will only cause the person to be even later than he is anyway.

Although the song contains a couple examples of failing irony, Alanis Morissette wrote a song that is stuck in everybody's head forever and won’t ever go away again.

Analysis "eifer&sucht", Prinz Pi

The two Words from the Song's title "Eifer" and "Sucht" mean "eagerness" and "addiction". Together they build the word "Eifersucht", which means "Jealousy". The narrator is quasi addicted with eagerness, and tries to handle things, that are not even existing.

Dealing with jealousy towards his girlfriend, in "Eifer& Sucht" Prinz Pi uses a real life situation as an example, charactarization of himself as an overreacting boyfriend, and awekward imagery in order to explain his unfair reaction when his girlfriend comes home in the mornig and doesn't respond to his accusations.

The narrator's girlfriend comes home in the mornig after a partynight with friends and gets pepperd with distrustful questions from him. She is tired and wants to go to bed, but he interprets her behaviour as that she wants to avoid telling him something. He starts having all these Ideas of what she could"ve done that night instead of really being with friends. He gets really mad, and wants to fight. In the end he is convinced, that she was with another guy and revenches, calling girlfriends from his past, to start a affair with one of them in order to hurt his actual distrusted girlfriend, who probably didn't even do anything wrong. He walks around , lives his life and thinks about what jealousy is doing to him. When she leaves him, he starts regreting that his jealousy has so much power over him and destroed their relationship.

He describes himself as an unfair boyfriend. His jealousy starts showing in the second line when he responds with :"You are kidding me" after his girlfriend said, she was out with friends. When she adds, that there was a guy with them who she knows from work, the narrator thinks that there is more, she doesn't tell him and becomes wary. He starts observing her and comes to the rsult, that she regrets and hides something. So he planes on revenge.
In the Refrain he sings "kann I trust no one, is there still truth?", not knowing who he can belive and what the actual truth behind unsaid things is. On the other hand it shows, that he is way to distrustful.

In his song, Prinz Pi uses awekward imagery in the Rafrain. Singing "Ants are crawling under my skin", he gives the audience a slight feeling for what the jealousy makes him feel inside. He is addicted to do anything about his assumptions, to fight her new boyfriend she doesn't even have. He checks her facebookpage to find proofs and knows that he acts idiotic. The song makes the listener a little angry with him, until he sings that he is mad with himself, for loosing her.

The Song describes really well, how jealousy starts with one little word, and how the mind starts wanderin and making things bigger and believable for the jealous person. When the person actually starts believing, what he thinks, it mostly ends worse than it would've if he believed her. That he looses her in the end, for nothing, tells the audience that sometimes trusting people makes yourself feel better.

Song Lyrics

prinz Pi- Eifer & Sucht

_________________________________________________________________________________

Translated, it is like this: ( I am sorry for the grammar)

Prinz Pi- eagerness& addiction (=jealousy)

She comes home in the morning / looks tired, smells of smoke / Almost sprains her foot in the high heels, swears, takes them off / I ask her where she was? / She sais she was with her friend.. / I say: You're kidding me! / She sais: You know nothing! / Sais: Well then, I was out with friends / but hey, nothing happened / I know the guy from work / Didn't get your text, phone wasn't charged, let me take my shower, don't bother me, I have to sleep now / I start making accusations- she doesn't have anything to say / Go out, go to work, want to pick a fight / but I'm not good at boxing- I'm just really mad / with that jerk-it often ends cruel / but mostly for myself / all that trouble with women / Why don't I have a liar-conductor?

Ants swarm under my skin, kann I trust no one, is there still truth? It eats me, it eats me. Jealousy, I'm together with jealousy.

Uncertainity gives me the tunnel vision / I awekwardly check her facebook...I bet she has a thing with that guy / today at lunch her puppy-eyes...yes she regrets something / I'll meet another girl now, she won't be happy abou that / I'm such a kindergarten- idiot, see the mistakes clearly but  make them / one hurt complete idiot activates an affair / my phonebook is long, but those nights are longer / The feelings won't fade away only because I blocked them out / And I miss her so bad / miss how she smells / everynight my hand goes where she normally lies / and when we're on the phone I am not nice to her but want to be / I'm so mad with myself, that she isn't with me any more

Ants swarm under my skin, kann I trust no one, is there still truth? It eats me, it eats me. Jealousy, I'm together with jealousy.

Little Green

Giving a child to adoption to offer him a better life, is certainly a tough and serious decision to make for young mothers all over the world. The Song “little green” is written by Joni Mitchell, who gave her little girl up for adoption in 1967 after she gave birth in the age at 20 and her boyfriend left to California. They had a reunion in 1997, after they searched for each other for years.  About her decision she said:
“ I was dirt poor. An unhappy mother does not raise a happy child. It was difficult parting with the child, but I had to let her go. ”In “little green” , Joni Mitchell uses pure and pretty Imagery, characterization  of an indifferent father, a troubled mother, and an innocent child, and natural personification, to show that “sometimes there’ll be sorrow”, and life sometimes requires tough decisions.

Little Green is “born with the moon in Cancer”, so she might have been born in a summer night, being the horoscopic cancer. Singing “when the spring is born” he puts the picture of flowers in the listeners heads and the positive feeling that is associated with springtime, that might rub off to the attitude against her daughter, influencing the way, other people see her, positively. She gives us a nice hand-tight example  how “icicles and birthday” are standing for a nice and neat childhood.

Mitchell characterizes the father of little green as a “non-conformer”. He went to California, right after the girl was born, “hearing that everything’s warmer there”.  After she wrote him a letter, telling him about the birth and except from a poem, she earns indifference from his side. He seems not rally to care, in order of being so far away anyways.
Herself, she describes as a “child with a child pretending”, telling the audience, that she was really young for having a baby. She decided, to give the baby up for adoption after naming it “little green”.
About herself she talks in the third form, so at the first sight it doesn’t seem like she’s actually talking about her own experience in the song.
The child itself was “born with the moon in cancer”, so probably in a summer night. Mitchell wants her to be a “gypsy dancer” and names her little green. When she gives her up for the adoption, she sings “little green, have a happy ending”, as saying a little goodbye to her daughter.

In “like the colour, when the spring is born”,Mitchell compares her daughter’s name with the arrival of spring, giving the season human characteristics, as the world appears to turn into a bright and colourful place, that might be associated with hope and strength.
She uses similar Personification, when she sings”like when the northern lights perform”. Northern lights are a beautiful appearance that seem to be  almost magic, when they occur. Comparing her daughter with those, wishing her the freedom of those lights, that move gracefully over the sky, she impresses that she really wants only the best for the child.
“There’ll be crocuses to bring to school tomorrow”, she sings, wishing her daughter a life without worries, so she can focus on those little things in life, like bringing flowers to school, when the time of the year has come.

Throughout the song, there are many seasonal literary devices that stick out, mostly describing that after the winter, the world gets green an beautiful again, just like life sometimes happens to be. Mitchell makes clear, that she wishes just the best for her baby daughter and thought about her decision seriously. That the song makes a little sleepy is makes sense, in order to be written for a little child and the opportunity to be a lullaby.
